Failure behaviour of human trabecular bone

چکیده

A trabecular bone tissue with its complex microstructural morphology can demonstrate a and random pattern of fracture. This paper analyses the effect material’s mechanical behaviour on failure modelling human bone. For this purpose, 3D unit cell was obtained from scans distal tibia performed high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT). In simulations, two types fracture trabeculae were considered - brittle ductile, respective elastic elastoplastic formulations. Two loading – tension compression applied to in order assess stress state locations onset. Positions damaged areas case brittle-fracture approach differed for compression, while same damage regions observed ductile criterion both conditions. It found that first resulted about times higher effective strength as compared second approach: 11.49 MPa 4.94 MPa, respectively. The calculated values material models are good agreement magnitudes tensile compressive reported literature. Effective parameters ultimate well yield considerably lower than those individual trabeculae: some 8% trabeculae.

Analyses of trabecular bone failure

Due to remodeling of bone architecture an optimal structure is created that minimizes bone mass and maximizes strength. In the case of osteoporotic vertebral bodies, however, this process can create over-adaptation, making them vulnerable for nonhabitual loads. In a recent study, micro-finite element models of a healthy and an osteoporotic human proximal femur were analyzed for the stance phase...

Shear strength behavior of human trabecular bone.

The shear strength of human trabecular bone may influence overall bone strength under fall loading conditions and failure at bone-implant interfaces. Here, we sought to compare shear and compressive yield strengths of human trabecular bone and elucidate the underlying failure mechanisms. We analyzed 54 specimens (5-mm cubes), all aligned with the main trabecular orientation and spanning four an...

Limitations of global morphometry in predicting trabecular bone failure.

Efforts in finding independent measures for accurate and reliable prediction of trabecular bone failure have led to the development of a number of morphometric indices characterizing trabecular bone microstructure. Generally, these indices assume a high homogeneity within the bone specimen. However, in the present study we found that the variance in bone volume fraction (BV/TV) in a single bone...

Analysis of Trabecular Bone Multiaxial Failure Using Large Scale Computation

INTRODUCTION Multiaxial failure behavior of trabecular bone is important clinically since multiaxial loads occur in vivo, and are associated with hip fractures [1, 2] and implant loosening [3]. Knowledge of the multiaxial failure behavior of trabecular bone also has biological importance since it will enable whole bone finite element models [4] to accurately predict failure loads. To date, no c...

Post Yield Behaviour of Bovine Trabecular Bone and Bone Analogous Materials under Compression

INTRODUCTION Metallic foams have been favoured for orthopaedic research and testing purposes for its open-celled, interconnected structure with adjustable densities but without the highly variable and inhomogeneous nature of trabecular bones. Mechanical behaviour of metallic foams has been investigated in numerous studies, although how their properties compare with those of trabecular bones is ...
